How to Know If a DJ Has Actually Read Your Brief

Most clients send a brief and hear back within 48 hours. The reply looks professional. It confirms dates, mentions genres, maybe includes a quote. Everything seems fine.

Then you meet the DJ on the day, and it becomes clear they've never actually looked at what you sent.

This isn't rare. It happens because the barrier to sending a polished-looking response is very low. Templates exist. Assistants exist. The ability to sound prepared is not the same as being prepared. The gap between those two things often doesn't become visible until the event itself — which is the worst possible moment to find out.

There are ways to see it earlier.

What Prepared Looks Like in the First Conversation

When a DJ has read your brief, the first conversation feels different. They ask follow-up questions that assume they already know the basics. They don't ask what type of event it is when you've already written that it's a product launch for 200 guests. They don't ask what genres you're thinking of when you've listed four specific artists in the document.

Instead, they probe the things the brief can't fully answer. What's the emotional arc of the evening? Is there a moment the client is particularly anxious about? Has this venue caused any audio problems in the past? These are questions that come from reading, thinking, and then wanting to fill in the gaps.

A DJ who hasn't read the brief will ask you to summarize it. You'll find yourself repeating information you've already provided. The conversation will feel like an intake form rather than a professional consultation.

Specific Green Flags

They reference something specific from your document — not a paraphrase, but an actual detail. "You mentioned the awards ceremony runs about 25 minutes — do you want music underneath that or silence?" That question is only possible if they read past the first paragraph.

They push back on something. A prepared professional sometimes spots a conflict or a gap in the brief and names it. "You've listed hip-hop and classical as the two main genres — those tend to serve very different moments. Can you tell me more about when each fits the evening?" That's not a sales call, that's work.

They volunteer information you didn't ask for. If they've done the same venue, they'll mention it. If they've handled the same type of audience before, they'll bring it up. Relevant experience doesn't wait to be extracted — it comes forward naturally.

They ask about the people in the room, not just the music. Who is the audience? What's their average age? Are there guests from multiple countries? Are there sensitivities — political, religious, cultural — that affect what goes on the playlist? A DJ who has read your brief understands that the brief is about an event for real people, not just a technical requirement.

Red Flags

Generic enthusiasm. "This sounds like an amazing event, I'd love to be part of it." This tells you nothing. A DJ who has read your brief doesn't need to perform excitement — they demonstrate engagement through specificity.

Questions already answered in the document. If you wrote that the event runs from 7 PM to midnight and the DJ asks what time the event starts, they haven't read it.

Portfolio that doesn't match. They send you videos of school discos when you're planning a financial services conference. Or they pivot immediately to price before understanding the scope of the project. Either signals that the brief was glanced at, not absorbed.

The instant availability answer. "Yes, I'm free that date!" Fine — but a DJ who immediately confirms without any logistical questions hasn't considered the job seriously yet. Load-in time, soundcheck window, parking, power requirements — those come up fast when someone has been thinking about the event rather than just the booking.

How to Test It

You can create a small, harmless filter in your brief. Bury a specific request in the middle of the document — something like "please confirm you've seen this by mentioning the colour of the stage lighting in your first reply." Most people skip it. The ones who don't just demonstrated something about how they read things.

This isn't about catching people out. It's about identifying, before money changes hands, who is treating your event as a job that deserves real attention.

What Preparation Actually Costs

Reading a brief takes maybe 20 minutes. Asking good follow-up questions takes another 30. Together, that's less than an hour before the first conversation — and it changes everything about that conversation.

The DJs who skip this step usually aren't doing it maliciously. They're busy, they're handling multiple bookings, they've done a hundred similar events and assume they know what this one needs. That assumption is exactly the problem.

Every event has at least one thing that is not like the others. Finding it before the event is what preparation is for.
